Fierce People (2005)
Status: Out on DVD
Starring: Diane Lane, Anton Yelchin, Donald Sutherland, Chris Evans

Rating: 4/5

Fierce People is about a teenage boy called Finn who is looking forward to spending his summer holiday with his Anthropologist father whom he has never met. That is until his mother whisks him away to New Jersey so that she can get her life back on track, and become the mother she wants to be for her son. Finn decides that if he can’t study the Fierce People in Africa with his father, he will instead conduct a study of the rich people in New Jersey with whom he is staying.

As Finn interacts with the people around him, he learns more about his mother and her past, and also about love, life, and hardship.

The tragedy of this film strikes you out of nowhere. Totally surprising after the happy-go-lucky start, the misfortune of one of the characters smacks you in the gut with a mallet and leaves you reeling. Well acted by all those involved, it makes you think twice about what sort of people there are out there in the World, and that the possibilities of unfortunate happenings are endless.

Fierce People is a film that, while inspiring me to greater heights with my writing, also leaves me doubtful of my abilities, and teaches me that I have a lot more to learn.

Recommended for those that love realism and drama.
